Accuracy: grammar, vocabulary, cohesion - First Language Vietnamese IGCSE Study Notes

Think of your writing like building a LEGO castle. To make a strong, beautiful castle, you need three main things to be accurate (meaning correct and precise):

• Grammar (Ngữ pháp): These are the rules for how words are put together to make sentences. Imagine grammar as the instruction manual for your LEGO castle. It tells you where each brick (word) goes, how to connect them, and what order to follow. If you ignore the instructions, your castle might fall apart, or look very strange!

• Vocabulary (Từ vựng): This is your collection of words. Think of vocabulary as all the different types of LEGO bricks you have – big ones, small ones, special pieces, and even different colors. Using the right brick (word) in the right place makes your castle look amazing and helps people understand exactly what part of the castle you're building.

• Cohesion (Mạch lạc): This is how well your ideas stick together and flow smoothly from one sentence or paragraph to the next. Cohesion is like the glue or the pathway that connects all the different parts of your LEGO castle. It makes sure that your drawbridge leads to the courtyard, and the courtyard leads to the tower, so the whole castle makes sense as one big structure. Without cohesion, your castle might just be a pile of random bricks!

Let's imagine you're writing a thank-you note to your grandparents in Vietnamese for a birthday gift, like a new bicycle. You want to make sure they understand how much you love it!

1. Grammar: You need to use the correct verb tenses and sentence structure. Instead of saying "Con xe đạp mới thích" (Which means "The new bicycle likes" – very confusing!), you'd write "Con rất thích chiếc xe đạp mới" (Meaning "I really like the new bicycle"). The grammar makes it clear who likes what.

2. Vocabulary: You want to use words that show your true feelings. Instead of just "Xe đạp tốt" ("Bicycle good"), you might use more descriptive words like "chiếc xe đạp tuyệt vời" (wonderful bicycle) or "con rất hào hứng" (I'm very excited). Choosing the right words makes your message stronger and more heartfelt.

3. Cohesion: You want your note to flow nicely. You wouldn't just write: "Cảm ơn ông bà. Con thích xe đạp. Con đi học." (Thank you grandparents. I like bicycle. I go to school.) That sounds a bit choppy, like separate thoughts. Instead, you'd connect your ideas: "Con xin cảm ơn ông bà về món quà sinh nhật là chiếc xe đạp mới. Nhờ có nó, con có thể tự đạp xe đi học mỗi ngày và con cảm thấy rất vui." (Thank you grandparents for the birthday gift, the new bicycle. Thanks to it, I can ride to school every day and I feel very happy.) The words "Nhờ có nó" (Thanks to it) and "và" (and) act like bridges, connecting your sentences and making your note smooth and easy to read.
