Marketing mix and research - Business A Level Study Notes
Overview
Imagine you have the best idea ever for a new toy, a cool video game, or even a super comfy pair of shoes. How do you make sure people know about it, want it, and can actually buy it? That's where marketing comes in! It's all about connecting your amazing product with the right people. This topic helps you understand the secret ingredients businesses use to make their products popular and successful. We'll look at the 'marketing mix', which is like a recipe for selling things, and 'marketing research', which is how businesses figure out what customers really want. Knowing this helps businesses avoid making things nobody wants to buy. So, whether you dream of starting your own business one day or just want to understand why some products fly off the shelves while others collect dust, learning about marketing mix and research is super important. It's the difference between a brilliant idea staying a secret and becoming a big hit!
What Is This? (The Simple Version)
Imagine you're baking a cake. You need the right ingredients (flour, sugar, eggs) and the right steps (mix, bake, cool) to make it delicious, right? In business, selling a product is a bit like baking a cake. You need the right ingredients, which we call the Marketing Mix.
Think of the Marketing Mix as the '4 Ps' โ it's a famous recipe for selling anything:
- Product: What are you selling? Is it a toy, a service like dog walking, or a new app? It needs to be good and meet a customer's need.
- Price: How much does it cost? Is it cheap and cheerful, or expensive and fancy? The price needs to feel right to customers and make money for the business.
- Place: Where can people buy it? In a shop, online, or from a vending machine? It needs to be easy for customers to get their hands on it.
- Promotion: How do people find out about it? Through adverts, social media, or by word-of-mouth? You need to tell people why it's great!
Now, before you even start baking your cake, wouldn't it be smart to ask people what kind of cake they like? Chocolate? Vanilla? With sprinkles? That's what Marketing Research is all about. It's like being a detective, gathering clues and information to understand what customers want, what they think of your product, and what your competitors (other businesses selling similar things) are doing. This helps businesses make smart decisions about their 4 Ps.
Real-World Example
Let's imagine a company called 'Zoomy Shoes' wants to launch a new line of trainers for teenagers. They can't just guess what teens want, right? That would be like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping it sticks!
First, Zoomy Shoes uses Marketing Research.
- They might send out surveys (questionnaires) online asking teens about their favourite colours, styles, and what they look for in a trainer.
- They might hold focus groups (small groups of teens) where they show them different trainer designs and ask for their honest opinions. "Do you like this sole? Is this logo cool or cringe?"
- They might look at what other popular trainer brands are doing (this is called competitor analysis).
Based on this research, they learn that teens want trainers that are comfy, look cool, and aren't super expensive. Now, they can use their Marketing Mix (4 Ps) to launch the trainers:
- Product: They design a trainer that's lightweight, comes in bright colours, and has a unique, comfortable sole (based on research).
- Price: They decide to price them slightly cheaper than the big-name brands but still enough to show they are good quality (based on research about what teens can afford).
- Place: They decide to sell them in popular high-street sports shops and also through a cool, easy-to-use online store (where teens shop).
- Promotion: They launch an advertising campaign on TikTok and Instagram, using popular teen influencers to show off the trainers (where teens spend their time online).
How It Works (Step by Step)
Let's break down how a business would typically use marketing research to inform its marketing mix. **Marketing Research Steps:** 1. **Identify the problem:** What do we need to know? (e.g., "Why aren't our new trainers selling well?") 2. **Plan the research:** How will we find out? (e.g., "We'll...
